About Me: Jason received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and is currently a PGY1 resident at BSLMC. His clinical interests include oncology and transplant and intends to pursue further training with a PGY-2 residency. Jason's professional goal is to become a pharmacy specialist in oncology or transplant at a large academic medical center and precept future students. In his free time, Jason enjoys playing fighting games, attending tournaments, and weightlifting at the gym.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: Jason's interest in BSLMC began when he compared the experiences he had in smaller community hospitals and larger academic medical centers and enjoyed the large diverse patient populations and experiences he was exposed to. BSLMC's program has a diverse and robust program that allows him to see high levels of care previously unexposed to and broaden his clinical knowledge.

Current Research: Evaluation of toxicities in leukemia patients receiving concomitant azole antifungals and oral chemotherapies

About Me: Nisha received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Houston College of Pharmacy and is currently a PGY1 resident at BSLMC. Her clinical interests include internal medicine and critical care and she aims to pursue further training in one of these fields. Following postgraduate training, Nisha intends to obtain a clinical position at an academic medical center where she can precept students and residents, participate in clinical research, and be involved in direct patient care. In her free time, Nisha enjoys spending time with family, reading, drawing, and journaling.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: Nisha chose Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center as it is an academic institution within the largest medical center in the world. The program offers a unique training experience, which includes exposure to a diverse patient population. As Nisha is interested in critical care, the variety of acute care rotations that BSLMC’s residency program provides piqued her interest. Furthermore, Nisha knew that the program would allow her to hone her research skills, as well as provide opportunities for precepting and mentoring. All of these experiences will allow her to accomplish her professional goals of prioritizing patient care, contributing to clinical research, and participating in student and resident training.

About Me: Meredith received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Louisiana State University and her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her professional interests include critical care. After her first year of residency, she plans to complete a PGY2 in critical care and become a clinical specialist. Outside of pharmacy, Meredith enjoys reading, trying new restaurants, exploring Houston, and spending time with family.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: Meredith was interested in BSLMC due to its location in the Texas Medical Center and its contributions to current medical practices. Once she met with the pharmacy team, she knew it would be a great environment to learn and grow as a pharmacist, have opportunities to precept and mentor students, and help prepare her for her future career.

About Me: Lynn received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Her clinical interests include solid organ transplant. internal medicine, and oncology. She intends to pursue a PGY2 residency in one of her areas of interests to become a clinical specialist at an academic medical center. In her free time, Lynn enjoys reading and watching movies.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: Lynn was interested in BSLMC for the institution's extensive opportunities in transplant. BSLMC also offers a variety of other rotations including cardiology, critical care, ID, etc. All the preceptors are dedicated to the residents' success and serve as leading examples of pharmacy leaders.

Alexis Nguyen, PharmD

Current Research: Comparing ertapenem versus meropenem for the treatment of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales bacteremia

About Me: Alexis received her undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. Her career in pharmacy began as a technician at Randall's Pharmacy in Austin, which eventually evolved into a pharmacist intern role once she moved to Houston and began pharmacy school. During her time at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, she developed interests in the acute care settings, specifically cardiology and critical care. Alexis intends to pursue a PGY2 residency program in one of these specialty areas upon completion of her PGY1 year at BSLMC. Alexis' long-term career goal is to become a clinical pharmacy specialist rounding with an interdisciplinary team in the ICU, while also serving as a preceptor to pharmacy students. In her free time, Alexis spends time with her loved ones by watching sports and reality TV in addition to exploring Houston's diverse food scene.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: Alexis' interest in Baylor St. Luke's PGY1 program began when she had her first APPE rotation at BSLMC. During this advanced hospital rotation, she was able to study under several residents finishing up their PGY1 program and was able to learn from the wealth of knowledge they had built over the previous year. BSLMC has a multitude of acute care rotations and is home to the Texas Heart Institute, which enables Alexis to receive unique experiences specific to her current professional interests. With this large academic teaching hospital being located in the Texas Medical Center, Alexis was sure she would be able to learn from experienced preceptors working under the most challenging settings, which would in turn allow her to sharpen her preceptorship skills and give back to future learners.

About Me: David received his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and is currently a PGY1 resident at BSLMC. His clinical interests include solid organ transplant and infectious diseases. Upon completion of his PGY1, he plans on pursuing further training in the specialty of his interest. David aims to practice as a clinical specialist at a large medical center after his postgraduate training, and wishes to serve as a preceptor for future pharmacy students and residents. Outside of pharmacy, David enjoys exercising, cooking, exploring Houston's restaurants, collecting house plants, and spending time with his cat.

Why Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center: While completing several rotations at BSLMC during his 4th year of pharmacy school, David met several preceptors and residents who promoted a positive learning environment. Additionally, the opportunity to precept and mentor students from various local colleges of pharmacy and working on multiple longitudinal projects further promoted his interests to the program. Located within the Texas Medical Center, the diverse and complex patient population that BSLMC serves provides a challenging but rewarding opportunity to hone one's clinical skills and achieve their career goals.
