Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

As we age, the spine changes, which can result in lumbar stenosis, making walking and other movements painful. Lumbar spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal canal due to aging and normal wear and tear in the lower back. This narrowing causes pressure and impinges on the nerves of the lumbar spine. Pressure on these nerves can cause neurogenic claudication, which has the following symptoms:

  • Burning pain in the buttocks or legs
  • Numbness or tingling in the buttocks or legs
  • Weakness in the legs
  • Improvement in pain when sitting down to rest or leaning on something when walking, such as a shopping cart

At Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Group Spine Center in The Woodlands, our experts diagnose stenosis of the lumbar spine with an MRI and then develop a customized treatment plan specific to your condition. Our providers offer a full range of services to help get your spine back to full health. There are many options for treatment, including:

  • Physical therapy
  • Medications
  • Steroid injections
  • Lumbar laminectomy surgery
