Memorial Health System of East Texas welcomes back Lufkinite, Sunil Cherry, M.D., as the newest member of area medical staffs in Angelina, Polk and Jasper counties.   A 1997 honor graduate of Lufkin High School, Dr. Sunil Cherry has spent the last 14 years preparing for a career in medicine, specifically as a board certified neurologist.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Cherry and his wife back to Lufkin and to our talented family of physicians.  He is a great addition to our stroke team that serves a population at risk of developing this life threatening and life altering illness,” said Bryant Krenek, President & CEO of Memorial.  “Dr. Cherry brings a wealth of knowledge and truly wants to give back to the community he calls home.”

Dr. Cherry joins the neurology practice that his father, Cherry Mathew, M.D., founded 29 years ago in Lufkin—Neurodiagnostics Center, located at 107 Medical Park Drive, Lufkin. The Center also has clinics located in Jasper at 315 West Houston Street and in Livingston at 400 Bypass Lane, Suite 112. Both physicians treat patients in all three locations.  Additionally, Dr. Cherry will serve as the Medical Director of the stroke program at Memorial.

Receiving his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University, Dr. Cherry continued his education at the Texas Tech School of Medicine where he earned his medical degree.  Later he completed an internship at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.  During the following three years he completed his neurology residency at Emory, the final year of which he served as chief resident of the program. Last year he completed a fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology where he received subspecialized training in epilepsy, neuromuscular disease, and sleep medicine.

While receiving his education, Dr. Cherry was recognized for academic excellence.  Beginning in 1997 as the Lufkin High School Salutatorian, Dr. Cherry was later named to the Dean and President’s lists for Academic Merit every year of his college education.  He graduated from Texas Tech Magnum Cum Laude and received an Early Acceptance Scholarship from Texas Tech School of Medicine.  He was presented the Robert Byrd Presidential Scholarship and was recognized for Academic Excellence in Neurology from the Texas Tech School of Medicine.

Dr. Cherry is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association and All Kerala Medical Graduates.

Dr. Cherry is now accepting new patients.  Most major insurance is accepted, including Medicare.  To schedule an appointment with Dr. Cherry in one of his three locations, please call 936-634-6333.
