Power of Pink! October 17

Mark your calendar for Thursday, October 17 for the 21st annual Power of Pink! Luncheon, hosted by Memorial Health System of East Texas and the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center.  The event will be held at Lufkin’s Pitser Garrison Convention Center, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $25 and went on sale September 9 at Memorial, the Cancer Center, Studio 319, Alene’s Florist and The Main Event in Lufkin.

This year’s luncheon features nationally recognized humorist and motivational speaker Sally Baskey.  Power of Pink! welcomes Mrs. Baskey back to the Lufkin stage to share her most recent life stories and experiences, which she entitles, “Reflections on Life from the Back of a Harley!”  Mrs. Baskey will talk about trust, missed opportunities, being “in the moment,” life’s unexpected detours, how to read the warning signs and more.

Power of Pink! is designed to educate women about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer while encouraging them to take care of their bodies through monthly self exams and annual mammograms. “Each year we are able to take this message to approximately 800 women who attend the luncheon,” said Lindsey Mott, Community Relations Specialist at Memorial Health System of East Texas and Power of Pink! Coordinator.  “It is our goal to create awareness about breast cancer, early detection and treatment.”

The event will also host the 5th Annual Art Bra Exhibit.  Memorial Health System of East Texas and Abeldt’s Gaslight Pharmacy have once again teamed up to present the Art Bra Contest in conjunction with Power of Pink! Community members are encouraged to decorate bras in memory or in honor of someone they know who has fought breast cancer or just to support the cause.  The decorated bras will be judged and displayed at the luncheon.  Rules and entry forms can be picked up at Memorial Medical Center – Lufkin, the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer Center, Abeldt’s Pharmacy or online at http://www.memorialhealth.org. For more information on the Art Bra Contest please contact Lindsey Mott at 936-639-7613.

“Each year the art bra entries are amazing!  From bras decorated with feathers and rhinestones to bras adorned with candy and Christmas lights, there is no end to the creativity we see!” Said Ms. Mott. “It is always fun to see what community members will come up with next.”  Decorated bras entered in the contest are judged by celebrity judges as well as online by the community to award Top Bra and People’s Choice.  The winning bras are modeled by celebrity models at the luncheon while all bras are on display.

This year everyone will have the chance to win a custom designed diamond pendant compliments of Lufkin Jewelry on the Square, this piece of jewelry is just one of the many items up for grabs in this year’s raffle drawing.  A family weekend getaway to Galveston compliments of Yates Media and a beauty package sponsored by Studio 319 will also be given away to lucky ticket holders. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the luncheon or at Memorial prior to the event.

With the continued support of sponsors such as The Main Event, Kwik Kopy Printing, Brookshire Brothers, Studio 319, Beard Fine Jewelers, Alene’s Florist, Alexander, Lankford and Hiers, East Texas Urology Specialist, First Bank and Trust East Texas, Swain and Baldwin Insurance, Advantage Plus Homecare, Angelina County Medical Society, Angelina Surgical Associates, Consolidated Communications, Heart to Heart Hospice, Lufkin Jewelry on the Square, Yates Media and many more, the Power of Pink! continues to reach women in the community spreading the message of hope and encouragement.  This year close to 800 women are expected to attend.
