William Brien, MD, Vice President of Medical Operations and Chief Clinical Officer
St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (Baylor St. Luke’s) has named William Brien, MD, as its Vice President of Medical Operations and Chief Clinical Officer, effective December 9. In this role, he will oversee all aspects of physician performance, quality, and clinical integration at the hospital. Dr. Brien will also serve as Executive Sponsor of the CHI Texas Division Orthopedic Service Line.
Dr. Brien joins Baylor St. Luke’s from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he served as Professor and Executive Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of Orthopedic Surgery.
“Dr. Brien’s experience as a surgeon, coupled with his vast leadership skills, will be instrumental in aligning our medical staff together for continued success,” said Wayne Keathley, President, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. “He will be vital in providing the clinical, strategic, and cultural leadership necessary to implement key strategic initiatives that will maximize clinical operations at the hospital.”
Dr. Brien is a former Chief of Staff at Cedars-Sinai, and has served on the Board of Directors and numerous Cedars-Sinai executive committees, including the Medical Executive Committee. Prior to Cedars-Sinai, he served as Vice Chair of Orthopedics at Los Angeles (LAC) + University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center.

Dr. Brien is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Rancho Los Amigos Research Award, the Philip D. Wilson Research Award at the Hospital for Special Surgery/Cornell University, and the Otto Aufranc Research Award from the Hip Society. Previously, he served on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is currently the President of the California Orthopedic Association.
He earned a medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and is a graduate of the University of Southern California. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the LAC/USC School of Medicine and his fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Brien was an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Director of the Joint Replacement Program at USC and was an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine.
