5 Classes to Take to Prepare for Baby

Posted in: Blogs , English

You’re going to have a baby! As your due date approaches, you may be feeling a mix of emotions, ranging from excitement to nervousness. Ease your concerns and gain confidence with resources right in your neighborhood. Take advantage of a variety of classes to prepare for the arrival of your newborn.

1. Prepared Childbirth Classes

About 10 to 14 weeks before your due date, doctors recommend taking prepared childbirth classes. During these classes, mothers-to-be can learn about what to expect during labor and delivery, relaxation techniques, pain management, and delivery options. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other couples preparing for the miracle of birth. St. Luke’s Health offers these classes at our Sugar Land, The Woodlands, and The Vintage hospital locations.

2. Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding can be challenging. With the right support, you can learn helpful techniques to promote a good latch and nourish your newborn. Breastfeeding support groups and classes can provide useful information about the benefits of breastfeeding and how to overcome common difficulties. You may want to consider attending a session with a certified lactation consultant. See our support group schedule at our Sugar Land location, or sign up for a breastfeeding class at The Woodlands Hospital.

3. Infant CPR Course

Infant CPR is an important skill for the whole family to learn. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be lifesaving in breathing or cardiac emergencies, but the technique used on infants is different from the technique used on adults. Take a class to learn how to recognize an emergency and how to respond. Join our next Infant CPR Review in The Woodlands.

4. Infant Care Class

Learn the fundamentals of caring for baby at an infant care class. Classes usually cover child safety and the basics—bathing, changing diapers, and more. Some also provide tips for the mother’s recovery process. Newborn care information may be shared during prepared childbirth classes, like at The Vintage Hospital, or offered in a separate session, like The Woodlands Hospital’s We've Had a Baby, Now What? class.

5. Sibling Class

Is your child is about to become a big brother or sister? Attend a sibling class, like the one at The Woodlands Hospital, about a month before your due date to prepare your child for the new addition to the family. These classes teach young children how to hold and handle babies, why babies do what they do, and what to expect when they come home. Ease your child into life as a sibling, and get him or her involved in this exciting time!
