What to Expect: The Second Trimester

Posted in: Blogs , English

During the second trimester, your appetite will most likely return and morning sickness often becomes a thing of the past. As you transition into the next phase of your pregnancy, you may notice some unpleasant symptoms begin to improve. While most women say the second trimester is the most enjoyable part of their pregnancy, there are a few changes to be aware of.

Bodily Changes During the Second Trimester

Though your morning sickness may have subsided, you may start to experience digestive issues. Common symptoms during the second trimester include constipation, gas, and heartburn. These symptoms should alleviate after labor.

As your belly expands, stretch marks may appear along your stomach, thighs, and breasts. Other skin changes may occur including skin darkening surrounding the nipples and belly button, oily skin due to increased perspiration, and itchy skin. Despite these skin issues, there is one positive of this phase. The second trimester marks the peak of your body’s blood volume, which lends to the “glowing” skin often associated with pregnant women.

You may also experience gum sensitivity and worsened eyesight, but don’t worry—these are normal reactions to pregnancy hormones.

Healthful Tips

Continue following the diet and exercise recommendations from the first trimester. This includes taking your prenatal vitamins, remaining active, and avoiding certain foods and substances.

The second trimester is also a good time to plan and prepare for your new baby as you approach the final stage of pregnancy. Check out locally offered prenatal classes. Topics like infant CPR, breastfeeding, and parenting are great options for you and your partner to consider.

Take a tour of a St. Luke’s Health Family Birthing Center to plan your birthing experience, or schedule an appointment with your Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Group OB/GYN to talk through any questions or concerns you may have.
