History of the heart transplant program

Established in 1982, the Heart Transplant Program at the Texas Heart® Institute at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center is one of the most experienced programs in the world. Our surgeons have performed more than 1,100 transplant procedures. Our highly skilled transplant team includes surgeons, cardiologists, transplant coordinators, staff nurses, operating room personnel, social workers, dieticians, rehabilitation specialists, and many other professionals.

In 1968, Denton A. Cooley and his team performed the first successful heart transplant in the United States and later implanted the first artificial heart at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. Learn more about the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center Transplant Center.
